In just a few short weeks, I will pass the gavel, and I can’t help but reflect on my journey as ALA’s President and a member of this incredible community for the past 20 years. Serving as President has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life, providing me with a unique opportunity to reflect on how far both ALA and the legal management profession have come over the past two decades.
When I first ran for the Board, I envisioned ALA as a dynamic, evolving organization. I preached the need to embrace change while we continue to honor our roots. Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to walk that fine line between evolving out of necessity and changing merely because it’s popular. Today, I am proud to say that ALA continues to adapt thoughtfully to meet the needs of the next generation of law firm leaders while maintaining the core values that have always guided us.
We’ve spent years examining the law firm of the future, but it’s just as essential to consider the leader of the future.
The legal management profession has transformed in ways we could scarcely have imagined. Remember when the most stressful part of our day was waiting for a fax machine to deliver a crucial document on that weird thermal paper that faded in a week? Back then, most of us couldn’t get email on our phones (man, those were the days.) Now, we have AI drafting our memos, cloud-based case management and hybrid work models that make us question if our office chairs even remember us. We have come so far, and yet our commitment to leadership and excellence remains steadfast.
As our profession continues to evolve, the next generation of law firm leaders will undoubtedly face new challenges and opportunities. We’ve spent years examining the law firm of the future, but it’s just as essential to consider the leader of the future. Their roles, responsibilities, networking preferences and educational needs are constantly evolving. ALA’s vision remains more relevant than ever, guiding us as we prepare for the road ahead. Creating Excellence. Driving Innovation. Empowering Leaders in Law. These words are the guidepost for our future.
ALA has been an essential part of my journey, both personally and professionally. I have seen firsthand how this community rallies around its members, offering not only professional guidance but lifelong connections. ALA is part of my story, and I will forever be grateful for the colleagues and friends who have traveled this path with me.
As I look to the future, I have complete confidence that ALA will continue to grow stronger and more resilient. To the next generation of leaders, I offer this advice: Stay curious, stay engaged and never stop challenging the status quo. The word “farewell” often implies an ending, but in truth, it can signify a new beginning. My farewell as President is not a departure from the community I cherish, but a transition to a new role within it. I know I am leaving the Board in capable hands, and I am excited to see what comes next.
Thank you for the privilege of serving as your President. I look forward to witnessing ALA’s continued success, and I will always remain a passionate advocate for our profession and our community. Fare well, ALA.
